History

Leigh Tennis Club Opening

The club was formed in 1980, with the following few years spent in negotiating a site for the courts and raising money to build them. Many activities, both social and commercial, were organised during this period to help build up our funds, culminating in an enormous boot fare held in the grounds of Hall Place in Leigh, which raised a considerable sum towards our expected costs.

During this time tennis was being played by members on courts belonging to a school, then known as Foxbush (now Sackville) in Hildenborough, and this allowed the enthusiasm for the game to continue flourishing within the Club.

The courts were eventually established on the present site in 1985; approximately half the cost being raised by the club, and the balance coming from a Sports Council grant and a loan from the Lawn Tennis Association.

Since then, further funds have been raised within the Club, from a Lottery grant and a further LTA loan, which have enabled the Club to build a new Clubhouse with modern facilities including a kitchen, toilets and two showers, and to install floodlights, allowing the courts to be used up to 9.30pm throughout the year.
